Today I have to make a blue glass chariot. This glass is born here in Murano in the furnaces where raw materials (sand and metals) are fused together and then pulled in order to create these sticks here. To work glass I use a torch, like this one, powered by methane and oxygen. The flame heats the glass up to 1200 °C and when it is fused the work takes place. So far, so good; if it were not for the glass to break And I do not mean that it breaks like that. I mean that, during the work, tensions inside the material are created; so, when glass is cooled, it breaks down. This is its peculiarity, that reaching the shape has a cost the compromise between the desired shape and the one that glass allows us to do. All this is rather stressful. Imagine working for hours on a piece that finally breaks in your hand For sure that it is not a pleasant experience at all. Hoping that everything goes well today, let’s go to the studio and make this chariot. Let’s start by making a quick sketch. There will be the two horses here, a central X structure, and here… As second, we will do the X structure; as third, the wagon and the figure above. Let’s start by making the two horses. At this point we can stop and wait for it to cool off, hoping that maybe legs grow alone … this way. Now let’s make the X structure. Here it is, and we have our central part. We’re done in another two minutes of work. Just make another horse like this and then put it all into the kiln, an electric oven, which brings everything to 500 °C and allows the glass molecules to relax and accept their new shape. Here the glass will remain for a few hours; when I’m going to open the kiln I hope to find everything intact because, if tensions are inside, they are stressed by the heat. The wings have grown… Ok, it’s time to put everything together: the two horses and the central part of the chariot; for doing this I will use this torch that is smaller, precise and ideal to do this kind of work. Ok, let’s go on. This could be a problem. The front of the chariot is ready now. Now we need to make the chariot cart and the figure driving the cart. The base is inside, now the kiln is at 517 °C.
