A center punch is a simple, but useful shop tool for woodturners. It creates a dimple in the blank that makes starting drill bits and locating spindle stock between centers very easy. The Apprentice Center Punch is spring-loaded, which is like having a built-in hammer. Just apply firm downward pressure until the spring strikes, leaving a dimple on its own. It’s easy to use one-handed and has a grippy knurled surface. For spindle stock use, simply lay out the center lines and punch both sides. The remaining dimples make it really easy to align the blank on the lathe centers. It’s also great for marking out faceplate screw locations on hardwoods that require a pilot hole. It’s a simple tool, but one that should be in every woodturner shop.
