I’m Ryan, I’m a Trainee Quantity Surveyor on a year out placement from Northumbria University. I’m Rob Younger, I’m a Trainee Site Manager and I’m fully employed by Tolent. I’m Scott Ross, I’m an apprenticeship Bricklayer by King Brothers I’m working currently between two sites, just procuring on what subcontractors we have on site, working out what works packages, who gets them, what subcontractors we select and maintaining their working relationship with the sites as well So I work on this site, I work day to day with the Assistant Project Manager to ensure Health and Safety is constantly up to standard on the site and make sure that the designs are being followed. (So what is this site?) This is Scotswood Assisted Living site. I just lay blocks and bricks. (You just lay blocks and bricks?) Yeah that is all I do. (So what’s your Apprenticeship?) Bricklaying (Bricklaying. Do you want to be a Bricklayer?) Yeah (What’s the best thing about working in the construction industry) Money (laughter) This is my first role within construction and it’s good to be out on site seeing the daily, what actually happens on site on a daily basis, just getting more of an understanding of how a job is actually constructed, how it goes about it. Being on site when you’re seeing the project be built, and at the end product its quite rewarding to see the end product complete. (And your just in it for the money – laughter) (It looks like you enjoy a bit of the camaraderie as well) Yeah we all get on, we all work quite close together so you have to have that bit of crack between yourselves makes it enjoyable, makes the day go quicker (Where would you like to see yourselves in five years?) Oh you chucked us under the bus there (laughter) Hopefully still with Tolent as a Senior QS as opposed to a Trainee Quantity Surveyor. Working as a fully qualified Assistant Site Manager. A fully qualified Bricklayer. (And if anyone asks you is it a good area to go and work in construction? What would you say) Yes, absolutely, yes.
