Hi, I’m Chris Hartley. I’m currently doing an apprenticeship studying
level three business administration. Hello my name’s Will. I’m a work based learning
assessor and an internal quality assurer at CAW Business school. I’m currently working
at Encocam, which is an engineering company based in Huntingdon. My job title is HR Trainee.
My job role can vary everyday. One of the main things I do is general administration,
updating the HR systems online with new starter information and even sometimes sitting in
interviews. The benefits of students undertaking an apprenticeship programme are numerous.
Not only do they achieve an accredited qualification in the form of a diploma, but they also improve
on their functional skills in Maths English and ICT. I find the students also improve
on their soft skills. This involves communication, they learn how to mix with different people
of ages and different abilities and their confidence can improve no end. The thing I
like most is that what I learn in my sessions with the college, I can take in practice while
I’m working. So recently I’ve been doing a unit on employer rights and responsibilities
so being quite new to the business and HR as a profession, maybe I didn’t know as much
information as I should. But having spent some time with the college and learnt the
overall unit, I’m now more confident in that area and I can apply it in my work. One thing
I noticed with my students is after they have been on the course for approximately the first
two to three months, is their confidence grows massively. Not only in communicating with
myself, but also communicating with their colleagues. Another thing I noticed that they
definitely improve on is in their time management skills. Each time I meet with them we agree
a realistic target for the student to complete the set work in time for our next meeting.
My tutor Will, he has been absolutely excellent with me. Any day, anytime, he is there by
email or phone to help me if I am stuck on any work and the college also provides some
excellent resources that help me through the units. The main resource available to students
is the VLE, which is the virtual learning environment that’s provided by the college.
This includes PowerPoints, interactive activities for the students to work on in between meetings
and it also contains resources that I use as a base when i’m teaching the knowledge
units to the students. Firstly, attitude is the key. Students need to have a good positive
can do attitude. Secondly, they mustn’t be afraid of hard work. It is hard work however,
as I said earlier, they have got the best of both worlds because they are gaining experience
in the work place and they are also achieving a qualification. Another point is appearance.
It is really important that students are smart and they take care of their appearance because
when they are going to the interview stage, they need to be able to stand out to the employer.
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone wishing to take it. It’s absolutely
brilliant. The college have been absolutely fantastic with me and i’m sure they would
be the same with absolutely anyone else. Be prepared to work hard, always consider your
future because who knows, the apprenticeship may lead to the full-time paid position. Apply
